Mary is a leading Writing assessment expert who has played a key role in the development of Learning Effects' performance assessment programs. She previously served as Director of Implementation for the national New Standards Project. Mary began her career as a teacher and principal and also served as the Director of the Division of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment for the Maine Department of Education. Mary has been a teacher and principal in both Michigan and Maine and, as a parent; she has enjoyed seeing her two children progress from public schools to college to interesting careers.

Mike has over 22 years of business management and finance experience. Prior to joining Learning Effects he served as Vice President of Gemini Systems, a wholly own division of Tyler Technologies. Tyler Technologies is a publicly traded Dallas, Texas based technology company. Previous to that, he was the majority owner of Gemini Systems, which he was involved with for ten years prior to selling the company to Tyler Technologies in 1999. He holds a degree in Accounting from the University of Maine.

Dave has over 15 years of management, marketing and business development experience working with rapidly emerging technology businesses. Prior to joining Learning Effects he served as the director of marketing and business development for Metagon Technologies, a Charlotte, NC-based software company. Previous to that, he was marketing director for I-Many, Inc., a contract management software provider serving the pharmaceutical and consumer packaged goods industries. In 1986 he co-founded SeaFax, Inc., a Portland, ME-based information service for the food industry where he served as president until 1995. He holds a degree in Economics from Bowdoin College.

Duane worked as director of test development at Measured Progress in Dover, NH from October 1995 to October 2003 after a lengthy and distinguished career in classroom instruction and public school administration. In his role as director of the Curriculum and Assessment division, Duane assumed responsibility for supervising and coordinating math and English language arts test development activities for Measured Progress's statewide assessment programs. In addition, he worked in an advisory capacity with educators on curriculum and professional development issues. In recent months he has been trained in Teacher As Assessor through Rick Stiggins' ATI company in Portland, OR. He has delivered professional development activities in MT, WY, LA and ME and facilitated bias reviews in various contracts, and led "face to face" reviews of item sets with clients. Additionally, he has written numerous items for reading assessments.

Brian has played a key role in the development of the STAR program (Schools & Technology for Assessment & Reflection), a federally funded educational assessment program for Maine schools. His leadership activities included managing and coordinating the flow of work and overseeing the scoring of student assessments. Brian also has extensive experience as a teacher, principal and vocational director in Maine schools.

Sandy has been a member of the Learning Effects team for five years. She brings to the team a wide range of educational experiences. With a Masters Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Maine, Sandra is presently a part time Superintendent of Schools in Raymond, Maine. She has experience as a curriculum coordinator, a Middle School principal, and as a grades 5-8 Language Arts Teacher. She worked as the Director of the S.T.A.R.(Schools and Technology for Assessment and Reflection) Program at the Center for Educational Services. As a Middle School Principal, Sandra led the first Instructional Support School for the Maine Department of Education. Honors include M.A.S.C.D. Leader of the Year, N.E.L.M.S. James P. Gavin Distinguished Service Award, and M.A.M.L.E. Leader of the Year. Sandra has served on the Commissioner's Task Force for Middle Level Education, the first president of the Maine Association of Middle Level Education, a Board Member of the New England League of Middle Schools and Maine A.S.C.D., and a member of the Professional Development Policy Advisory Committee for the Maine Department of Education.

Sandy Arnold, M.Ed. Math Specialist |  |

Sandy is a retired teacher and has taught primarily in the intermediate and junior high school as a math specialist. Her last position was as a mathematics gifted and talented teacher for grades 4 and 5. Sandy has worked for the STAR program, a federally funded educational assessment program for Maine schools. She has been with Learning Effects for seven years and has had an active role in the benchmarking and teacher training activities for mathematics. She currently splits her time between Maine and Florida, enjoying the benefits of retirement.
